Triangles Lesson Plan

Class: Foundations of Photography [Grades 9-12]

Central Focus:

Photographers use forms like triangles to create dynamic and balanced compositions.

Content Standard:

Creating: (VA:Cr2.1.8a) Students will demonstrate a willingness to experiment, innovate, and take risks to pursue ideas, forms, and meanings that emerge in the process of art-making or designing.

Presenting: (VA:Cr3.1.IIa) Students will engage in constructive critique with peers, then reflect on, re-engage, revise, and refine works of art and design in response to personal artistic vision.

Learning Targets:

  • I can look closely and notice (Studio Habits of Mind)

  • I can talk about my work and processes (Studio Habits of Mind)

  • I can talk about what works well, why does not, and why, in works by self and others (Studio Habits of Mind)

Daily Lesson Objective

  • Students will look at art by photographers and analyze the composition for its form

  • Students will take their own photos and then evaluate compositions for triangles

    and personal interest

  • Students will describe their images and appraise their classmates’ work

Students will take 15-30 photos outside or inside. Using street photography ethos. As they’re taking photos, they will intentionally frame their compositions with a triangle in mind

Students will select their top three images and submit them to a group padlet. In “comments” students will write or speak about where their favorite one and why

In groups of 2-3, students will pair share and review one another’s work in small breakout rooms. Groups will select a presenter to share back with the class

Answer exit ticket self-reflection on K-W-L

Differentiation: Using visual aid, modeling, and group work, the Jamboard exercise will be an inclusive introduction to triangles in composition for all my students including my SPED & ELL students. In student groupings, I will consider groupings that bring in students of different learning styles and experience levels. Ie pairings will include a student with medium and novice-level photo engagement.

For the assignment, differentiation is considered by what the students choose to take photos of. When posting their favorite, students may choose to write or speak about that image.
